Prayer for the Family:
God, you are the Father of everything in Heaven and on
earth; Father, you are love and life; make every human
family on earth become, through your son Jesus Christ,
born of the Virgin Mary through the power of the Holy
Spirit, a source of divine charity and a true sanctuary
of life and love for the generations to come. May
Mary, Mother of the Church and Mother of Carmel, be also
the Mother of the "domestic church." With
her help may every Christian family truly become a
"little church" in which the mystery of the church of
Christ is mirrored and given new life. May she,
the Handmaiden of the Lord, be for every family an
example of humble and generous acceptance of the will of
God. May she, the sorrowful Mother at the foot of
the cross, comfort the sufferings and dry the tears of
families in sorrow, difficulty or distress. May
she the Mother of Grace, intercede that the thoughts and
deeds of spouses will be directed to the good of their
families and all families of the world. Through
her, the Mother of Hope, may the younger generations
find in the family strong support for their humanity, so
that they may grow in truth and love. May all
families, strengthened by the grace of the Sacrament of
Matrimony and the intercession of the Mother of Carmel,
live in the faith and love that will prove to be
stronger than any weakness or crisis, economic hardship,
separation, sickness or suffering they must endure.
And may the family of the Church, supp0orted by the
Mother of the church, complete her mission among all
nations in the family and through the family.
Amen.

Using brain scans an international team of
scientists has taken a look inside the brains of
patients diagnosed as being in a "vegetative
state." These patients, the images clearly
showed, were living silently - their minds
apparently active. The scans showing brain
activity like that in any healthy conscious
person. This counteracts the arguments
that such patients are "in a vegetative state."

Twelfth
Sunday
in Ordinary
Time |
Today's readings, especially the
second reading and gospel, have a theme of following Christ.
But for them following doesn't mean hanging with Him or going to his
Facebook page,. It means being like him: St. Paul says
we must "look" like Christ and St. Luke says we must "act" like
Christ.The second reading
from Galatians says that we have clothed ourselves with Christ.
Paul is saying that we must resemble Christ, not physically, like
having the same haircut or beard, but in the sense that people can
see Christ in us. He says that all followers of Jesus
are united in faith, a unity that is more important than the
differences in race, gender, or economic condition. So instead
of seeing what is different about another person, we concentrate on
what unites, namely our faith in Christ. Instead of struggling
to be patient with people, or to be kind and generous, or to be
respectful - we just see Jesus in them and let his Spirit guide us
to respond with love.
The gospel of Luke shows us that
acting like Jesus really means taking up his cross daily. I
think even Jesus knew this would not be easy to understand, as he
also describes it as denying ourselves an says we must lose our life
in order to save it. Denying yourself refers to the choices we
make to look out for others instead of just ourselves. It may
be very personal, like visiting a sick person, instead of
staying home to watch TV. Or it could be on a larger scale,
when we give to a charity instead of saving for ourselves. It
might be simply listening to your wife when she's had a bad day.
So then taking up our cross is an attitude of willingness to suffer
for others. And losing your life for Jesus' sake means that we
do all these things with hope: We may not see immediate
results, but Jesus' resurrection showed that suffering and even
death leads to new life.
Looking and acting like Jesus are
not as easy as they sound. We need to spend time in prayer
with the Lord, so his Spirit can renew us and give us the courage to
take up our crosses. The more we get to know Jesus, the easier
it becomes to resemble him and help others se him in us.
